International Women's Day Fundraiser

In March, we celebrate International Women's Day (IWD), but this month, I am going to carry the celebration all month long.

This year's IWD theme is #BreakTheBias

This speaks to me on a personal level because I've experienced bias so many times in my 47 years of life, I've lost count. But if there's an underlying theme, it would certainly be because I am a woman.

For years, I've been dedicated my life to empowering women. For 10 years, I worked at a women's shelter advocating to end violence against women, and raising funds for the shelter I worked at. And now in my enterepeneurial journey, the work continues, it just looks different.

Every woman, no matter their shape, skin colour, age etc that's sat in front of my camera has shared a story or hinted at some biases they have faced. I've heard so many stories I've lost count.

One story that stands out was a woman that held a senior position within her company who came to see me to update her headshots. Prior to her session, she was advised by a consulting company that her organization was working with, that her headshots should really be with her wearing her glasses because "she would be taken more seriously as a woman at work."

Seriously? We can do better than that.

Stereotyping and biases take many forms. Some women have experienced bias becuase of skin colour, age, sexual orientation, socio economic status, where they work (think women in a male dominated field); and the list goes on.

However, this month, I invite you to tell your photo story. It gives us an opportunity to learn from another person's experience and it can shape, strengthen or challenge our opinions and values. When a story catches our attention and engages us, we are more likely to absorb the message and meaning within it than if the same message was presented simply in facts and figures.

  If you don't want a headshot, use this opportunity to take a fun portrait in a casual style — such as sitting in a chair, holding a prop, bring your dog, your child etc.
  
  
• $50 from every package will support Family Transition Place in providing their critical programs + services they deliver to the communities they serve in Dufferin and Caledon.
